NMS Students explore Dabu Printing Workshop
Neerja Modi School, Jaipur, organised a hands-on Dabu Printing Workshop for Grade VII students, offering them an opportunity to explore Rajasthan’s rich textile heritage and experience one of its traditional printing techniques.
The workshop was conducted by Dheeraj Chhipa, a seventh-generation Dabu printing artisan from Bagru. Through demonstrations and practical activities, students learnt about the traditional resist-printing process, the use of natural materials and the craftsmanship behind intricate textile designs.
Students experimented with traditional Dabu resist paste and hand-carved wooden blocks to create patterns inspired by Rajasthan’s artistic heritage. Motifs such as peacocks, camels and butterflies allowed them to express their creativity while discovering the techniques passed down through generations of artisans.
The workshop also introduced students to the sustainable aspects of traditional textile practices and highlighted the importance of preserving indigenous crafts. A collaborative activity, in which two students created a butterfly design across adjoining pieces of fabric, further encouraged teamwork, precision and creativity.
The Dabu Printing Workshop at Neerja Modi School connected classroom learning with Rajasthan’s living cultural heritage. Such experiential learning initiatives encourage students to develop artistic skills, appreciate traditional craftsmanship and understand the importance of sustainability and cultural preservation.
